President Donald Trump's administration withdrew troops from Germany this month, raising concerns among supporters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth then announced the decision to cancel the deployment of 5,000 U.S. troops to a base in Poland. Trump, however, then shot down the plan, however.

The Independent noticed that Trump's Truth Social post claimed he was “pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki.”

Trump's announcement countered Hegseth's comments to the Pentagon that he was holding back his planned rotation of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division. They were only to be in Poland for nine months.

Both sides of the political aisle expressed concerns about Trump's troop draw down in Germany, so when the announcement came for Poland, they were further fearful that Trump was attempting to either defund or dismantle NATO. A law passed before Trump took office blocks him from withdrawing from NATO without the approval of the House and Senate.

"That decision followed Hegseth’s order to withdraw 5,000 more U.S. personnel from bases in Germany to punish that country after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly criticized the U.S. handling of the three-month-old war with Iran," the report noted.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) was furious with Hegseth's troop announcement.

“We don’t know what’s going on here, but I just tell you we’re not happy with what’s being talked about, particularly since there’s been no statutory consultation with us,” he said.

Indeed, pulling soldiers from central Europe sent tongues wagging on both sides, particularly amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance called the freakout in Europe “overreacting.”

“We’ve not reduced the troop levels in Poland by 4,000 troops. What we did is that we delayed a troop deployment that was going to go to Poland. That’s not a reduction, that’s just a standard delay and rotation that sometimes happens in these situations,” he said.

The Wall Street Journal revealed, "A current and a former U.S. official said Trump asked Hegseth in a recent phone call why the troop deployment to Poland was canceled."

The Journal reported that Trump told Hegseth that America should not go up against Warsaw, given that they've been such good allies of the Trump administration.

The White House downplayed the switch up as unrelated to the relationship between Trump and Hegseth.

Trump “appreciates all the secretary has done — and will continue to do — in executing the America First agenda within our military and prioritizing our warfighters like never before,” said deputy press secretary Anna Kelly

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said Trump and Hegseth “communicate constantly and are in lockstep regarding U.S. troop movements in Europe.”

Hegseth has been mocked mercilessly by several Trump administration officials who see him as a "dumb" version of Robert McNamara, the former defense secretary who expanded the war in Vietnam, Zeteo reported in March. Much like Vietnam, Hegseth's war is being widely seen as a major strategic failure, The Independent reported.
