Taking on PH now, Umno man grateful for ex-allies’ past support

KLUANG: About 20 months ago, Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah won the Mahkota seat during a by-election with a whopping 20,648-vote majority.

This was an exponential increase compared with the 5,166-vote majority Barisan Nasional enjoyed in the 2022 state election, partly thanks to Pakatan Harapan campaigning for Syed Hussien during the 2024 by-election.

However, the July 11 state polls will be a very different experience for Syed Hussien, whom Umno has fielded again to defend the seat, as he will not have PH by his side this time.

The Umno man faces a three-cornered contest to retain the seat for a second term, taking on PH candidate Ahmad Zuhan Zain and Parti Bersama Malaysia’s Abd Hamid Ali.

Syed Hussien told FMT that he remains grateful for the help PH, including DAP, extended when campaigning for him during the by-election nearly two years ago.

DAP holds the Kluang parliamentary seat, which Mahkota falls under, and the neighbouring Mengkibol state constituency.

“When people want to help us, we should accept that help with gratitude and regard it as a blessing.

“This time, we will be competing against each other, but there is no need to go overboard because we have our own way of doing things in Johor.”

He admitted that vying against PH could affect the total number of votes he could obtain but maintained that it was more important to obtain a solid mandate from the people of Mahkota to continue his agenda to develop the area.
