KUALA LUMPUR: Amanah president Mohamad Sabu today defended the party’s decision to field a Chinese candidate in a Malay-majority seat for the Johor state election next month.
“There is no issue with fielding a Chinese candidate. God willing, we will resolve every problem,” he said at a press conference here.
Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, was commenting on Amanah’s decision to name Sharon Teo as its candidate for the Permas seat, which raised eyebrows among political observers.
He was asked about concerns over possible dissatisfaction among the party’s supporters and Teo being rejected at the polls.
Teo, a former Johor Amanah secretary had previously said the party is multiracial.
Umno won the Permas seat in the last state polls with a 7,926-vote majority.
Amanah came in third in the five-cornered fight after its candidate, Syed Othman Abdullah, secured 14,521 votes.
Malay voters represent a little more than half of the electorate in the constituency.
