The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) has led the largest-ever Hong Kong delegation to the BIO International Convention 2026 (BIO 2026) in San Diego, from June 22 to 25, marking a significant expansion of the city’s presence in the global life and health technology sector. The delegation, comprising 41 organizations including partner companies, research institutes, and for the first time, spin-offs from five top universities, doubled the size of the Hong Kong Pavilion compared to last year.
This record delegation underscores Hong Kong’s strengths in AI-enabled biotech, therapeutics, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical innovation, with potential ‘First-in-Class’ and ‘Best-in-Class’ assets. The city is already recognized as Asia’s largest and the world’s second-largest fundraising hub for biotechnology, and this presence at BIO 2026 reinforces its position as a key player in the global healthcare innovation landscape.
Key highlights of the convention included the signing of three major strategic partnerships. HKSTP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with LabCentral, one of the largest global non-profit biotech incubators, to deepen ties between the U.S. and Hong Kong life sciences ecosystems through startup support, ecosystem engagement, and co-developed programmes. This collaboration will create stronger pathways for cross-border innovation and commercialisation.
Immuno Cure, a developer of the first-in-human novel therapeutic HIV vaccine ICVAX, announced a collaboration with OPIS, an international Contract Research Organization (CRO), to support overseas clinical trial execution and establish a global framework for international expansion. Additionally, Zhaoke Ophthalmology signed an MOU with Laboratório Teuto, the first company to produce generic medicines and OTCs in Brazil, to explore cross-border cooperation in ophthalmology, marking Zhaoke’s first strategic MOU in the Brazilian market.
HKSTP CEO Mr. Terry Wong emphasized the importance of the convention as a platform to showcase Hong Kong’s innovation and deepen partnerships. ‘As a super-connector, Hong Kong is uniquely positioned to bridge global innovators with opportunities across Asia and beyond,’ he said. He highlighted the city’s strong R&D capabilities backed by world-class universities, five of which are ranked among the QS Top 100, including two with medical schools now in the global top 20.
Beyond the pavilion, HKSTP engaged in various activities, including a panel on ‘Translating Innovation Across Borders,’ a visit to the Salk Institute with university delegates, and a Global Mixer co-hosted with InvestHK and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco. Industry leaders such as Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, LabCentral, Roche, Simcere Pharmaceutical, and T.Rx Capital participated in startup pitching sessions and networking events.
In the lead-up to BIO 2026, HKSTP co-organised the 2026 Biomedical Pitch Competition with the Boston Capital Investment Club, where HKSTP park company Meta Pharmaceuticals (HK) Limited won Third Place for its next-generation autoimmune therapeutics. This recognition underscores the strength of Hong Kong’s biotech pipeline and HKSTP’s commitment to translational medicine and globally scalable healthcare solutions.
Hong Kong’s biotech ecosystem continues to expand, with HKSTP home to more than 300 life and health technology companies. The corporation connects capital, talent, infrastructure, and market access across the biotech innovation journey, helping innovators turn pioneering ideas into real-world impact.
