Trump ally labeled 'worst person in Senate' for breaking donation promise to veterans

Former college football coach turned U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) is facing a fresh firestorm over new in-depth revelations that he failed to make good on his promise to donate his Senate salary to veterans groups.

According to a report from Lagniappe, a deep dive into whether the controversial MAGA senator resides in Alabama as he makes a bid to be governor turned up proof that the majority of his annual income that would have gone to veterans in need stayed in his bank account despite his 2020 promise when he ran for office

The report notes, “The same Alabama tax data does not show in-kind charitable gifts. The returns list $35,672 in what appears to be interest paid or charitable gifts in 2021, no listed amount in 2022, $2,500 in 2023 and no listed amount in 2024. Assuming each of those dollars went to support veterans, the total is only $38,172 over four tax years. Tuberville’s wages reported in Alabama were $529,419 over that same span. He reported income of more than $2.9 million when factoring in real estate and investment earnings.”

That led some prominent journalists and DC insiders to suggest he has a firestorm he needs to put out as the election nears.

On X, former “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd wrote, “This is a pretty high profile promise to break. Reminder how fixing one bad story can create new ones. All of this reporting is from the tax returns the campaign released to prove he met the 7-year residency requirement.”

“Possibly the worst person in the Senate,” former CNN White House correspondent John Harwood accused.

CBS journalist David Leavitt, emphasized “The wooorst” with a GIF.

“Awful. That money could be truly life changing for veterans and their families in Alabama. I hope Tuberville eventually lives up to his commitment,” former Barack Obama appointee Dave Vorland offered.

Journalist Janice Hough, disagreed about Tuberville being “the worst” and joked, “Ted Cruz demands a recount.”

“Dear Alabama: Please don’t make this guy our governor,” former US Attorney and Alabama resident Joyce Vance wrote on Wednesday morning.
