In the Public Square: Preparing for the trial of Sara Duterte

With the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte less than a week away, more and more Filipinos are now tuning in to the story. Will the trial prove to be a landmark civics lesson, a political education for many of us, or will it turn out to be only a political soap opera, just another expensive distraction?

The most famous impeachment trial in Philippine history was the aborted one involving former president Joseph Estrada. What was it like to be part of the House prosecution panel then—and what possible lessons may be of use to the House prosecutors today?

In this episode, Rappler columnist John Nery is joined by former congressman Oscar Moreno, who was a House prosecutor then and who went on to serve as governor of Misamis Oriental and mayor of Cagayan de Oro City. 

To shed light on what is it like behind the scenes, Congressman Terry Ridon of the Bicol Saro party-list group, a House prosecutor, will also discuss about the matter.
