Tokenomics de Hedera (HBAR)

Hedera’s native cryptocurrency, HBAR, serves as the primary fuel for the network's decentralized economy. Launched in 2018, the token was designed with a fixed maximum supply and a controlled release mechanism to ensure network security and long-term sustainability.

Issuance Mechanism

HBAR has a maximum total supply of 50 billion tokens. These tokens were pre-minted at the network's launch in August 2018 and moved into the Hedera Treasury. Crucially, the total supply cannot be increased without the unanimous consent of the Hedera Governing Council.

The issuance into circulation does not occur through traditional mining or inflationary block rewards. Instead, tokens are released from the treasury into the ecosystem through a structured schedule. As of mid-2023, approximately 32.2 billion HBAR (64% of the total supply) were in circulation.

Allocation Mechanism

The 50 billion HBAR tokens were allocated across several strategic categories to balance ecosystem growth, developer incentives, and stakeholder compensation.

Key highlights of these allocations include:

• HBAR Foundation: In September 2021, the HBAR Foundation was allocated a significant portion (approximately 10.7 billion HBAR at the time) to fund development initiatives.
• Swirlds, Inc.: As the creator of the hashgraph technology, Swirlds received a one-time allocation of 2.5 billion tokens plus ongoing monthly payments.
• Founders: Co-founders Leemon Baird and Mance Harmon collectively own approximately 9.9% of the total supply.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

HBAR serves two primary functions within the network: Network Fuel and Network Protection.

• Transaction Fees: HBAR is used to pay for all network services. These fees are split into three components: node fees (paid to the node submitting the transaction), network fees (paid to the treasury for bandwidth and processing), and service fees (paid for specific features like file storage or smart contracts). Fees are denominated in USD but paid in HBAR to ensure predictable costs for developers.
• Staking and Security: Hedera uses a permissioned Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model. Consensus nodes must stake HBAR to secure the network, and their influence on consensus is weighted by their stake.
• Staking Rewards: The Hedera Governing Council has approved a maximum annual staking reward rate of 2.5%. Both node operators and individual HBAR holders (delegators) can earn rewards. To qualify for maximum rewards, a node must meet a minimum threshold of 250 million HBAR.
• Developer Incentives: The network provides grants through the HBAR Foundation and various hackathons (such as Hedera22) to incentivize the creation of decentralized applications (dApps).

Locking Mechanism

Hedera utilizes several locking and vesting structures to manage the release of tokens:

• Restricted Coin Units (RCUs): Employees and service providers are often compensated with RCUs. These typically follow a four-year vesting schedule with a one-year cliff, meaning no tokens are received until the first anniversary of the grant.
• SAFT Restrictions: Simple Agreements for Future Tokens (SAFTs) used in early funding rounds included specific lock-up periods. Some SAFT holders participated in an "Exchange Offer" in 2020, which extended their distribution schedules in exchange for additional token allocations.
• Treasury Management: The Hedera Governing Council manages the "Released-but-illiquid" supply, which includes tokens that have been allocated for specific purposes but are not yet available for sale on the open market.

Unlocking Time

Hedera implements a long-term token release strategy originally planned for 15 years to prevent any single entity from acquiring enough stake (one-third) to disrupt the network.

• Quarterly Distributions: Tokens are generally released from the treasury at the end of each quarter. For example, in Q3 2023, approximately 3.7% of the total supply was scheduled for unlock to support ecosystem programs and investors.
• Release Schedule Adjustments: The estimated release schedule has been updated over time. While early versions of the whitepaper estimated 59% of tokens would be released by 2025, the updated "v3" whitepaper estimated a more conservative release of 34% by that same year.
• Current Status: The supply increases at discrete intervals rather than linearly. By June 2022, the supply had surpassed 20 billion tokens, and the distribution is expected to continue through at least 2025 and beyond to reach the full 50 billion cap.
