Pepe (PEPE) Tokenomics

Pepe (PEPE) is a meme cryptocurrency launched on April 14, 2023, on the Ethereum blockchain. Designed primarily for entertainment purposes, it leverages the cultural significance of the "Pepe the Frog" meme. The project emphasizes a community-driven approach with a "no-tax" policy and a renounced contract, meaning no single entity can alter its code.

Issuance Mechanism

The issuance of PEPE followed a "stealth launch" model with no presale or public/private funding rounds. The total and maximum supply is capped at 420,690,000,000,000 (420.69 trillion) tokens.

The token was generated as an ERC-20 asset on Ethereum, though it has since been bridged to other networks, including BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) and Arbitrum (ArbERC-20). As of late 2024, the vast majority of the supply (~99.97%) remains on the Ethereum mainnet.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial allocation of the 420.69 trillion tokens was divided into two primary categories to ensure liquidity and future growth:

Notably, in May 2023, approximately 26.74 trillion tokens from the multi-sig allocation were moved to a dedicated multi-sig wallet initially controlled by eight signers. In August 2023, the project reported that three former team members illicitly accessed this wallet and stole roughly 16 trillion tokens, which were subsequently sold on various exchanges.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

PEPE is explicitly described by its creators as a "completely useless" token intended for entertainment. It does not confer voting rights, claims on capital, or profit-sharing.

• Deflationary Mechanism: The token contract includes a manual "burn" function. The project team has utilized this to destroy tokens to increase scarcity. Additionally, the original liquidity provider (LP) tokens were burnt at launch.
• Redistribution: Some project descriptions mention a redistribution system designed to reward long-term holders, though official technical documentation emphasizes that there are no transaction taxes.
• Utility: Historically, holding at least one PEPE token granted access to the "Pepe Palace" Discord server, but this functionality was discontinued by late 2024. Currently, the primary interaction point is the direct swap function on the official website.
• Incentives: There are no formal staking or liquidity provision rewards offered natively by the Pepe project.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

The PEPE token economics are characterized by a lack of traditional vesting schedules or complex locking mechanisms for the team, as the contract was renounced shortly after launch.

• Locking: The liquidity provision tokens were burnt at the start, effectively locking that liquidity permanently.
• Unlocking: Data indicates a "cliff" unlock event occurred on April 17, 2023, coinciding with the token's initial launch and distribution phase, where the total supply of 420.69 trillion tokens was effectively released into the ecosystem (either to the liquidity pool or the multi-sig wallet).
• Blacklisting: The contract originally included a "blacklist" function. This was used once, approximately eight minutes after launch, to block an address that had acquired roughly 2.52 trillion tokens. Because the contract ownership was subsequently renounced, this address can never be removed from the blacklist.

As of December 2024, nearly the entire supply is considered unlocked and circulating, with the exception of tokens held in the project's multi-sig wallet for exchange liquidity and those held in blacklisted or burnt addresses.
