Binance Coin (BNB) Tokenomics

BNB (formerly Binance Coin) is the native utility token of the BNB Chain ecosystem, which includes the BNB Smart Chain (BSC) and the BNB Beacon Chain. Its tokenomics are designed to support a deflationary supply model while providing utility across both decentralized networks and the centralized Binance exchange.

Issuance and Supply Mechanism

BNB was launched in July 2017 via an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token. It later migrated to its own native blockchains.

• Initial Maximum Supply: 200,000,000 BNB.
• Current Total Supply: Approximately 150,540,000 BNB (as of December 18, 2024).
• Deflationary Mechanisms: Binance employs a multi-faceted burn strategy to reduce the total supply until it reaches 100,000,000 BNB (50% of the initial supply).
  • Auto-Burn: A quarterly mechanism that calculates the amount of BNB to be destroyed based on the token's price and the number of blocks generated on the BNB Smart Chain during that quarter.
  • Pioneer Burn: A program that assists users who have accidentally lost BNB by counting those lost tokens toward the quarterly burn totals and reimbursing the users under specific conditions.
  • Real-time Burn: A portion of gas fees spent on the BNB Smart Chain is burned in real-time.

Allocation and Distribution

The initial distribution of the 200 million BNB supply was structured to fund development and incentivize the founding team and early investors.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

BNB serves as the "gas" for the BNB Chain and provides various utilities within the Binance ecosystem:

• Network Fees: Used to pay for transaction fees and smart contract executions on the BNB Smart Chain.
• Staking and Consensus: Under the Proof-of-Staked Authority (PoSA) mechanism, the top 45 validator nodes are responsible for network security. Users can self-stake a minimum of 2,000 BNB to become a validator candidate.
• Staking Rewards: Validators and their delegators receive BNB rewards derived from transaction fees. Rewards are distributed daily at 00:00 UTC.
• Governance: Active validators and delegators participate in on-chain governance. Voting power (govBNB) is proportional to the amount of BNB staked.
• Exchange Utility: On the Binance platform, BNB is used for trading fee discounts, participating in Launchpad token sales, and earning yield through "Simple Earn" or the "BNB Vault."

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Schedule

BNB utilizes several locking mechanisms depending on the user's activity:

• Staking Unbonding: If a delegator chooses to unstake their BNB from the network, there is a seven-day unbonding period during which the tokens remain locked and do not earn rewards.
• Binance Simple Earn: Users can choose to lock BNB for fixed terms of 15, 30, 60, 90, or 120 days to earn higher APRs (ranging from 0.05% to 0.5%).
• Slashing: To ensure network integrity, validators can be "slashed" (fined). For example, double-signing a transaction results in a 200 BNB penalty, while missing more than 150 blocks in 24 hours results in a 10 BNB penalty.

Historical Unlocking Timeline

The initial allocations for the founding team and investors followed a multi-year vesting schedule that concluded in 2021.

As of late 2021, all tokens from the initial allocation have been unlocked, meaning the circulating supply is now primarily influenced by the ongoing burn mechanisms and staking participation.
